It may be aggravated with similar activities that cause acute stress fractures. It is present in around 5% of the population and is often asymptomatic. A pars defect is not congenital, but develops early in life. There are also chronic bony lesions in this area known as ‘pars defects’. Stress fractures may occur in structurally normal bone. Classic sports affected include cricket fast bowling or gymnastics, but they may occur in any running or pivoting sport Symptoms occur commonly in adolescence, and generally relate to exercise that involves extension and/or rotation. ![]() Lumbar stress fractures occur due to an overload of the pars interarticularis region. Up to 30% of athletes between 11-17 may have lower back pain, and a high index of suspicion for stress fracture should be maintained in this age group. Your therapist will advise how to safely resume certain activities or sports.Lumbar stress fractures are a common cause of lower back pain in adolescence. Phase 3: Aiming to return to pre-injury activities or sports. Your therapist will show you exercises that will strengthen the bone in a way that it can adapt to properly and not get overloaded (stressed). Phase 2: Aiming to re-strengthen the bone of the vertebral arch. ![]() Your therapist will inform you specifically what to avoid. Activities and/or sports that have been causing the problem need to be avoided in this phase. This may involve hands-on treatment to alleviate muscle tension. Phase 1: Aiming to resolve pain and prevent a fracture (if caught early enough) or to allow the stress fracture to heal. Time-frames for returning to sporting activities can range from 3 – 12 months. The length of time it takes to get better depends on how early it is identified and treated, and how well the individual can avoid aggravating the condition as it heals. In most cases, with treatment symptoms will resolve in 6 – 12 weeks. Localised tenderness and muscle spasming/guarding in the lower back.Bending to the side or to the back, or rotating through the spine may be painful.May have occasional radiating pain into the buttock or back of the thigh. ![]()
